Kano Sharia Commission bans ‘attachment’ between keke riders, female passengers

The Kano State Sharia Commission has banned the practice known as “attachment”, where commercial tricycle (keke) riders carry female passengers on the sides of their tricycles.

The commission said the practice goes against Islamic teachings because it involves close physical contact between male riders and female passengers.

The directive was announced by the commission’s Second Commissioner, Sheikh Ali Danabba, during a meeting with leaders of the Tricycle Owners and Riders Association (BOTORA).

The meeting focused on improving cooperation and promoting order in Kano’s commercial tricycle transport sector.

Danabba said riders must immediately stop carrying female passengers on either side of their tricycles under the “attachment” arrangement.

He said “the practice is banned under Islamic law because it involves unnecessary physical closeness between male riders and female passengers.”

According to him, the meeting was organised to strengthen cooperation between the Sharia Commission and BOTORA in addressing issues affecting the state.

He said discussions also covered efforts to stop child abduction, fight drug abuse and trafficking, and encourage discipline and good behaviour among tricycle operators.

Danabba urged riders to obey the new directive and support efforts to promote moral values, public order, and safety across Kano State.

The chairman of BOTORA promised that the association would fully cooperate with the Sharia Commission in promoting public safety, social order, and the overall development of the state.

The meeting was attended by Sheikh Ali Danabba, Commissioner Gwani Dahir Yakasai, senior officials of the Kano State Sharia Commission, and members of BOTORA’s leadership. (LEADERSHIP)
