Shekarau’s LND backs anti-Tinubu coalition, mulls registering new party
The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has declared support for the national opposition coalition for the “transitional politics towards 2027”.
In a communique issued at the end of the LND’s general assembly meeting held in Abuja on Thursday, Umar Ardo, the convener, said the league would take a final decision on whether it would fuse into an existing political party or register a new one.
The meeting was attended by Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano and chairman of the LND, and other leaders.
“We resolved to support the National Opposition Coalition Group chaired by Sen. President David Mark in driving the transitional politics towards the 2027 general election,” the communique reads.
“We resolved to contribute to the dialogue on either registering a new political party or fusing into an existing one.
“We resolved that our first option is to register a new party in order to accommodate many independent members of the larger established political parties who currently feel reluctant to move into a smaller party but who are willing to move out to form a new party.
“In the alternative, to fuse into an existing party as a primary and necessary alternative.
“We resolve to coordinate a meeting of a larger various northern groups as agreed a few weeks ago in the ACF meeting in Kaduna to solidify northern positions.”
Addressing journalists, Ardo said the committees set up to consider the options of a new party or fusing into an existing one had made their submissions before Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna, noted that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) is also interested in the arrangement.
“So, the committee set May 30th to decide either to go with ADC or form a new SDP or form a new political party,” he said.
Ardo said the group condemned the defection of members of the national assembly without consequences, adding that it is an affront to the constitution.
TheCable had reported that opposition leaders have virtually agreed on adopting the African Democratic Party (ADC) as the platform to challenge the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, el-Rufai, and other opposition figures have been holding meetings aimed at forming a coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.
An insider said el-Rufai had appealed to the coalition leaders to pause final adoption of ADC and give him two weeks to present a formal pitch on why the SDP is the best option.(The Cable)
