Gattuso named Italy head coach following Spalletti exit

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has officially appointed Gennaro Gattuso as the new head coach of the national team.

Gattuso, a 2006 World Cup winner and former Azzurri midfielder, replaces Luciano Spalletti, who stepped down earlier this month following Italy’s shock 2–1 defeat to Norway during the current international window.

Though speculation in the Italian media had initially linked Claudio Ranieri to the job, reports indicate he declined the offer, paving the way for Gattuso’s appointment.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Gattuso has signed a one-year contract with an option to extend it by another year if Italy qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 46-year-old’s most recent coaching stint was with Croatian club Hajduk Split. His debut on the touchline for Italy will come in a UEFA Nations League match against Estonia on September 5.
