BREAKING:Tinubu Approves Up To 80% Salary Increase For Armed Forces, Boosts Troop Welfare

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 per cent across different ranks in what is being described as one of the most significant welfare packages for military personnel in recent years.

The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit approximately 250,000 officers and soldiers serving in the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Under the approved package, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 per cent increase in their salaries.
Officers from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent salary increase, while personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent, a move aimed at significantly improving the welfare of junior personnel who constitute the bulk of the nation’s fighting force.

The salary review will increase the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for military personnel from N660 billion to N924 billion, reflecting the administration’s commitment to strengthening the morale and operational effectiveness of the armed forces.

President Tinubu said the decision underscores his administration’s appreciation for the sacrifices and dedication of members of the armed forces who continue to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.

According to the President, the men and women of the armed forces deserve greater support as they risk their lives daily to protect Nigerians and safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising troop welfare while continuing efforts to modernise the military through the provision of improved weapons systems, equipment and advanced technological capabilities needed to combat evolving security threats.

“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.

Tinubu stressed that security remains the bedrock of national development, noting that no country can attain greatness without ensuring the safety of its citizens and protecting lives and property.
He assured Nigerians that his administration remains determined to deploy all available military and law enforcement resources to eliminate threats to national security.

The President also urged members of the armed forces to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their patriotism and selfless service.

“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.

The approval is expected to further boost the morale of troops engaged in various internal security operations across the country and reinforce the Federal Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the welfare, motivation and operational readiness of Nigeria’s armed forces.
