2027: Tinubu’s Camp Tight-Lipped As Atiku Invites President To Debate

Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has challenged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to a public debate ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The invitation is expected to intensify the political contest between the two major contenders, coming as opposition parties continue preparations for the 2027 election.

Atiku has repeatedly criticised the Tinubu administration over issues including the economy, fuel pricing, borrowing and governance. His recent campaign has also focused heavily on his proposal to reintroduce a form of targeted petrol subsidy if elected. 

However, Tinubu’s camp has so far remained tight-lipped over the latest debate challenge, with no immediate commitment from the Presidency or the President’s campaign team on whether Tinubu would accept.

A televised debate between the two politicians would attract significant attention, given their political history. Tinubu defeated Atiku in the 2023 presidential election, winning 8,794,726 votes against Atiku’s 6,984,520.

The proposed encounter could provide both candidates an opportunity to present their records and policies directly to Nigerians, while allowing voters to compare their positions on the economy, security, unemployment, infrastructure, fuel pricing and other national issues.

Atiku’s challenge also comes amid heightened political activity ahead of 2027, with the ADC positioning itself as the platform for opposition forces seeking to defeat Tinubu. Recent statements from Atiku’s camp have continued to portray the election as a contest over the direction of Nigeria under the current administration. 

For Tinubu, accepting the challenge could offer an opportunity to defend his administration’s economic reforms and achievements. Declining it, however, could equally fuel speculation among opponents about the President’s willingness to engage Atiku directly.

As of the latest reports, the key question remains whether President Tinubu will accept Atiku’s invitation—and if so, when and under what platform the debate would take place.
