Honeywell Gets $300 Million Deal for Dangote’s Kenya Refinery
Honeywell Technologies has secured an estimated $300 million contract to provide technology and engineering services for Aliko Dangote’s planned 700,000-barrel-per-day refinery in Lamu, Kenya.
The agreement was announced on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as Dangote and Kenyan President William Ruto formally broke ground for the $16 billion refinery project. The facility is expected to become the world’s largest single-train refinery once completed.
Under the agreement, Honeywell will provide process technologies, licensing, engineering services, proprietary catalysts, equipment and digital solutions for the refinery.
The company’s work will draw heavily on engineering designs developed for the Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. Honeywell said the use of proven designs could reduce the Kenyan project’s development schedule by nearly two years, or about 30% compared with a typical newly built refinery.
The Kenyan refinery is designed to produce gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and polypropylene, while being capable of processing a wide range of crude oils, from light to heavy grades. This flexibility is intended to allow Dangote to source crude from different regions rather than depend on a single supply source.
The Honeywell deal follows a separate $450 million engineering contract awarded to Engineers India Limited for the project. Dangote has also offered East African governments a combined 30% stake in the refinery.
The Lamu refinery is expected to serve Kenya and neighbouring East African markets, with the broader project aimed at reducing the region’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
Dangote and Honeywell have worked together for nearly a decade, with Honeywell also playing a technology and engineering role in the development and subsequent expansion of Dangote’s Nigerian refinery.
Construction of the Kenyan refinery is expected to take several years, with the project currently targeted for completion around 2030.
