Ex-Liverpool defender Carragher settles tax debt to avoid bankruptcy
Former Liverpool and England defender Jamie Carragher will not be declared bankrupt after settling an unpaid tax debt to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).
According to the BBC, an insolvency judge, Nicholas Briggs, dismissed a bankruptcy petition against the 48-year-old at the Insolvency and Companies Court on Tuesday after the tax authority confirmed that the debt had been paid.
The petition was issued in August, with HMRC representative Kevin Hassan telling the court in London that Carragher had settled the outstanding bill. No exact amount was disclosed during the hearing, although the debt was previously estimated at between £700,000 and £800,000.
Carragher spent his entire professional career at Liverpool and was part of the team that won the UEFA Champions League in 2005.
The former defender retired in 2013 after making 737 appearances for the Premier League club.
Since retiring from football, Carragher has built a career as a television pundit, regularly appearing on Sky Sports and CBS Sports.
