The Ohaneze Ndigbo, Lagos State chapter, has condemned what it called negative publicity given to the election skirmishes that occurred in some places in Lagos during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.

Chief Solomon Ogbonna, the president of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Lagos, said this during a press conference in Lagos on Tuesday.

Solomon noted that he and the executive members of the apex Igbo body in Lagos visited the suspected troubled spots like Okota and Oshodi only to discover that though there were pockets of trouble as is peculiar with elections, it was overblown by the media.

“I visited Okota, Oshodi and other places on the election day but there were no fighting as the media reported it.

“Yoruba are the best friends of Igbo, we have the best of relationship with the Yoruba. If you know what Igbo are passing through in other places, you will know that we are living in peace with Yoruba.

“Issues between Yoruba and Igbo during the presidential election were overblown,” he said.

On the alleged stoppage of Igbo opening their shops at Oshodi on Sunday, the Ohaneze president said: “We got a story of Igbo being stoned while trying to open their shops. I immediately called former Lagos Ohaneze president, Chief Ebitu Ukiwe, and Lagos Police Commissioner. Immediately, he dispatched officers and my people opened their shops. We are on top of the situation,” he said. (Daily Independent)
