UCL: Onyedika scores in Club Brugge’s win as Rashford’s brace helps Barcelona beat Newcastle
Rafael Onyedika scored the second goal as Club Brugge thumped Monaco 4-1 in their opening UEFA Champions League (UCL) match on Thursday.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria midfielder was heavily involved as Club Brugge put on a dominant display at Jan Breydelstadion, with Nicolo Tresoldi, Hans Vanaken, and Mamadou Diakhon all on the scoresheet. Ansu Fathi scored Monaco’s consolation goal.
Onyedika scored his second ever UCL goal as Club Brugge netted thrice in the space of 10 minutes. The 24-year-old had the second highest number of touches in the match (71) and was involved in majority of the attacking moves by the hosts. He was substituted on 80 minutes to rousing applause from fans.
Elsewhere, Haaland scored his 50th UCL goal to lead Manchester City to 2-0 win over ten-man Napoli at the Etihad Stadium. The Norwegian striker achieved the half-century in 49 matches, the fastest by any player. Jeremy Doku secured the second goal with a solo effort.
Marcus Rashford returned to England to haunt Newcastle United, scoring a brace to lead Barcelona to a 2-1 win at St. James’ Park.
Galatasaray were thrashed 5-1 by Eintracht Frankfurt in Victor Osimhen’s absence.
