Nigeria’s richest woman Folorunsho Alakija donates hospital to Osun State
Nigerian businesswoman and philanthropist Folorunsho Alakija has donated a newly built hospital to Osun State, adding to a string of personal projects aimed at improving access to healthcare and education.
The handover ceremony, held this week, transferred ownership of the facility to the Osun State government. Officials described it as a “standard hospital building” designed to serve communities that have long lacked reliable medical care. The cost of construction was not made public, but state representatives said the donation would ease pressure on a system that remains chronically underfunded.
Alakija, 73, made her fortune through stakes in oil producer Famfa Oil and decades in fashion and real estate. Over the past ten years, she has turned her attention to philanthropy, using her wealth to fund social programs through the Rose of Sharon Foundation and Flourish Africa. Those initiatives have supported widows, orphans, and female entrepreneurs, while also offering training and seed funding for small businesses.
The new hospital fits that broader mission. For Osun — one of Nigeria’s less affluent states — the facility represents rare, ready-to-use infrastructure at a time when budgets are tight and federal funding is unpredictable. Health analysts say Nigeria’s doctor-to-patient ratio remains among the world’s lowest, forcing patients to travel long distances for even basic care. A functional, locally managed hospital could make a real difference for nearby communities.
In her remarks at the ceremony, Alakija said the gift reflected her faith and her belief in private citizens’ role in public service. “Our country’s challenges can be met with compassion and action,” she said. “This hospital belongs to the people who need it most.”
