BREAKING: Supreme Court affirms president’s power to declare emergency, suspend elected officials

The Supreme Court has upheld the president’s authority to declare a state of emergency in any state to prevent a breakdown of law and order.

The apex court, in a split decision of six to one on Monday, emphasised that the suspension of elected officials must remain within a limited period.

Mohammed Idris, justice of the Supreme Court, held in the lead majority judgment, “Section 305 of the Constitution empowers the President to deploy extraordinary measures to restore normalcy where emergency rule is declared.”
