Unless He Wants To Kill Us All, We Will Not Pay Taxes To Budget Padding Thieves — Nigerians Vow To Resist Tinubu’s Taxation

Nigerians are pushing back against Bola Tinubu’s tax reforms, with many expressing concerns about the potential economic fallout.

The government have overtime maintained that the proposed reforms will boost revenue and promote fiscal sustainability, however, critics argue they’ll hurt low-income earners and small businesses.

The major concerns are the proposed increase in VAT rate from 7.5% to 12.5% in 2026 and 15% in 2030, potentially aggravating poverty amid suffering in the country owing to government policies.

Among other fears are regressive taxation, as VAT increases may unfairly impact poor households who spend a larger portion of their income on basic goods.

Some stakeholders including Northern governors and some lawmakers have opposed the reforms, citing concerns about revenue distribution and impact on their states.

Similarly, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and other civil society groups have vowed to resist the tax reforms, organizing protests and demonstrations across the country.

Amid criticisms, the Tinubu government is not backing down on the tax reforms with government maintaining its stance amid fears that the reforms could cripple Nigerians who are at the receiving end of his policies.

Taking to X to express displeasure in a trend monitored by Parallel Facts correspondent, a cross section of Nigerians accused the Tinubu government of tyranny, saying the only thing his government has done well is over taxing Nigerians.

An X user, @_Bigmoolah wrote on X that ‘’Unless Tinubu is ready to kill all Nigerians we will not pay taxes to budget padding thieves, looters, blood sucking monsters that shoot down their own people who try to protest, they want you to pay tax in a country where you might go to jail if you try to….’’

@michaelch1825, If the lazy youth of Nigeria don’t fight and end this new tax policy that tinubu went to France to make an agreement for whatever we don’t know will end you all who are keeping quiet.

@Mezue_They stole our common wealth and natural resorces, we kept quiet because ‘I dey hustle, govt or no govt I go survive’. Now they’re after that your hustle in the guise of taxes, Soludo with his property tax, Tinubu with his income tax. Except we collectively say enough is enough.

@IfeanyiDeclan, Tinubu! I don’t want to pay tax to France. 🙄

@iamspotlex, 800k is way way too small. Tinubu basically want to take money from everyone. 70,000 (minimum wage) x 12 = 800,000.

Those saying us and UK pay taxes, please go and compare the amount.

Seems you’re part of the recruited social media crew for this useless tax evangelism.

@Bhinumhar001, So nobody is saying anything about the 2026 Tax. Okay Tinubu administration have done nothing to Nigerians.

We’re at government theft now aren’t we.

Huge increases in council tax, for fewer services, in order to fund increases in local council costs for illegal migrant accommodation and support under ‘operation scatter’

You would never have voted for this 💣 pic.twitter.com/rbB0yZndCV
