Abia Man Sets Himself, Wife, Three Children On Fire Over Alleged Infidelity, Daughter Dies
The Abia State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has condemned a horrific case of domestic violence and child abuse in Onicha Ngwa community, Obingwa Local Government Area, where a man allegedly set his entire family ablaze over suspicions of infidelity.
The incident, which occurred between 1am and 2am on Saturday, involved a 40-year-old man, Mr. Udochi Amala, who reportedly doused himself, his wife Mrs. Amarachi Amala, and their three children in petrol before setting them on fire in a shocking act of domestic rage.
The family hails from Amapu Ihe village in Osisioma LGA.
According to police sources, Udochi survived the fire and attempted to escape but was apprehended by community members.
One of his daughters died on the spot from severe burns.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Mrs. Amala and the two remaining children succumbed to their injuries late Monday while receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.
Speaking to investigators, Udochi reportedly said, “I have an issue with my wife, and I did not know that it would get to this extent. I am tired of this life.” He also admitted that he had no proof of his wife’s alleged infidelity.
The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the incident. “Yes, the police are aware. Investigation is ongoing,” said DSP Maureen Chinaka, Police Public Relations Officer.
However, in a statement released on Tuesday, FIDA Abia expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the incident, calling it a gross violation of human rights and dignity. The statement, signed by Chairperson Njideka Aniawonwa and Secretary Eberechukwu Kanu Oji, read:
“We are in shock and deeply saddened by this horrific act. FIDA Abia calls for a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of the perpetrator. Justice must be served, and adequate support must be provided for all victims and survivors of domestic violence.”
FIDA also urged the government and relevant agencies to strengthen protection mechanisms for women and children, while encouraging members of the public to report any cases of abuse to authorities.(SaharaReporters)
