Having been led by Christian leaders for the past years, Lagos State deserves a Muslim governor, the Archbishop of Methodist Church of Nigeria (Lagos) Most Reverend Isaac Ayo Olawuyi has said.

Olawuyi while speaking 22nd annual thanksgiving service of the Lagos State House of Assembly said by 2027, Christians would have occupied the number one seat in the state for 12 years.

The clergyman’s remark was disclosed in a statement issued by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa.

According to the statement, the Archbishop of Methodist Church noted that there should religious tolerance among the people.

He said 2027 is a time for the people of Lagos state to elect a Muslim governor for the state.

Since Nigeria switch to democratic leadership in 1999, four governors have led Lagos state with Bola Tinubu and Babatunde Fashola governing between 1999 and 2015 – two tenures each for four years per tenure cycle. Both governors were Muslims.

In 2015, Akinwunmi Ambode assumed office, completed his tenure in 2019 before handing over the Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Both Ambode and Sanwo-Olu are Christians.

As it is, the clergyman is calling for a Muslim governor by 2027 when Sanwo-Olu would be completing his maximum two tenures of four years each.

The clergy while driving his point home said, “I also want to add that we have consideration for religious inclination in Lagos State. It would be 12 years in 2027 that we have been in the system together and we have been having Christians as governors.”
