Alumni kick as UI constructs new Senate building at Heritage Park

The University of Ibadan (UI) is set to construct a new Senate Building at Heritage Park, one of its popular recreational spots. Management’s decision to cut down rows of trees at the famous park has continued to generate flurry of reactions from alumni and students. The Heritage Park is located along Oduduwa road, opposite Queen Elizabeth Hall.

The UI Heritage Park was one of the major green spaces in the university due to its lineup of canopy trees which served as a shed for various students, staff and other residents on campus.

Many reactions have poured out following this action by the management. Most of the reactions bordered on environmental and deforestation concerns.

“Oh well.. Heritage Park is gone So many creatures have lost their homes. They have created an imbalance in the ecosystem. The natural beauty of the University of Ibadan is fading away gradually,” @mfonobongawah lamented on X.

Another alunmus of the university using the hashtah: #BringBackOurPark, said the park was a memorial and historic legacy. “That park connect to many married and unmarried families. Several graduation and matriculation pictures had been taking there. Nollywood used the place as campus life story. Both White House and Buckingham Palace have never been rebuilt. The syndrome of erasing previous landscapes for new ones common to our politicians should stop.”
