The Association of Foreign Relations Professionals of Nigeria (AFRPN) has called for a more robust reaction to the attack on a Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia.

It said such reaction would prevent future attacks on Nigerian diplomats and home-based embassy workers anywhere in the world.

The association lauded the steps the government had taken so far, including the recalling of the country’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Usman Ogah.

A video which has gone viral had shown a Nigerian diplomat, Mohammed Buba, being strangulated and pinned down by Indonesian officials in a moving car, while he was shouting, “I can’t breathe” as the Indonesians assaulted him.

Foreign Affairs Minister Geoffrey Onyeama subsequently summoned the Indonesian envoy on Monday, and recalled the Nigerian ambassador to the Asian country.

In a statement yesterday, titled: Undiplomatic and Uncivilised Treatment of a Nigerian Diplomat in Indonesia, AFRPN President Ambassador Gani Lawal said the assault on Buba was a violation of Article 29 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, 1961.

It said: “The association recommends the immediate disengagement of all the Indonesian immigration officers involved in such uncivilised manner to desecrate the age-long tradition of inviolability of diplomatic agents and their family and property as provided by Article 29 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations (1961), which states: ‘Diplomats must not be liable to any form of arrest or detention. They are immune from civil or criminal prosecution.’

“The AFRPN commends the immediate step taken by our Ministry of Foreign Affairs in summoning the Indonesian ambassador before receiving the full report from its embassy as a first step in the series of reactions reserved for such heinous diplomatic blunder.

“Equally commendable is the subsequent step taken by MFA after receiving the mission’s report by inviting home the Nigerian ambassador for consultation while expecting the Indonesian ambassador to toe the diplomatic avenue by equally returning to Jakarta until satisfactory explanation and necessary restitutive steps are taken by Indonesian authorities to assuage frayed nerves.”

Also, the senator representing Ondo South, Nicholas Tofowomo, has urged the Federal Government to immediately repatriate all Indonesians living in Nigeria.

The senator, who spoke at his Ile Oluji country home, urged President Muhammadu Buhari to decline all apologies from the Indonesian government and take a decisive action against the Asian country.

“I saw the footage circulating on social media showing how a consular officer based in Jakarta was being held down embarrassingly in a vehicle by Indonesian immigration officials who were filmed assaulting him.

“I consider this as an utmost insult to our sovereignty. This is nonsense and madness taken too far by the affected Indonesian immigration officials who were filmed enjoying the inhuman treatment of a Nigerian diplomat,” he said.
