Babachir Lawal resigns from APC, cites future political plans
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending his affiliation with the party he joined at its formation and served under during the Buhari administration.
Lawal’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated June 29, 2025, and addressed to the APC chairman of Bangshika Ward in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State. In the letter, he confirmed his departure from the ruling party with immediate effect.
“I write to formally notify you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress,” Lawal stated. “In due course, I will make public my current political affiliations where I plan to join other compatriots to work towards making Nigeria a better living place for all its citizens.”
He concluded the letter with a message to his former party members: “Please, remain blessed and extend my warm regards to other members of your party.”
Although Lawal has not officially declared his next political affiliation, he has been linked to a growing opposition coalition reportedly working to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the APC in the 2027 general elections.
The coalition includes former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi.
The group is said to have adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of the elections.
