Benue gov suspends aide arrested by EFCC for sextortion, blackmail
The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia, has suspended his Special Adviser on Documentation, Research and Planning, Mkor Aondona, who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for alleged sextortion, cyberbullying and blackmail.
A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Tersoo Kula, on Sunday said the suspension was indefinite and aimed at upholding integrity, discipline and accountability in public service.
The governor said any official of his administration “found wanting in matters of criminality or ethical misconduct will face the full weight of the law.”
Kula said Aondona is expected to submit himself fully to the legal process and respond to the grave allegations against him.
“The Government of Benue State under the administration of Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia remains committed to protecting the rights and dignity of all citizens, especially women and vulnerable groups, and will continue to collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure justice is served,” the statement added.
The EFCC had, in a Saturday statement, announced Aondona’s arrest in Makurdi, following petitions from some female students who accused him of unethical conduct.
The petitioners alleged that Aondona routinely recruited slim and attractive girls for ushering jobs but demanded sexual favours as a condition for selection.
He was also accused of secretly recording explicit videos of the girls without their consent and sharing them across messaging platforms.
Some of the videos were reportedly already in circulation.
The EFCC said the suspect would be charged to court soon.(Punch)
