Borno governor visits Marte, recovered stronghold of Boko Haram

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Saturday stormed new and old Marte, two major towns in Marte Local Government Area on the shores of the Lake Chad, held for long by Boko Haram insurgents.

It was the first time a civilian delegation visited the communities in years. Insurgents attacked Marte in 2013. Citizens of the local government area have remained displaced till date; majority live in Monguno with some in Maiduguri. No civilian currently lives there. Boko Haram had remained in firm control of the farming communities where the Chad Basin Development Authority has thousands of farmlands for federal government irrigation schemes in the 80s.

During the visit, Zulum undertook assessment of destructions effected by the insurgents on public and private property.

The governor, while addressing journalists after completing his assessment, assured that Borno State Government would fast track the reconstruction in Marte to pave way for the establishment of civil authorities.

Marte Local Government was one of the Boko Haram strong hold liberated by the Nigerian military and multinational forces.

Governor Zulum is the first civilian to visit the town since it was liberated. Places visited by the governor includes; local government secretariat complex, General Hospital New Marte, and Government Secondary School, New Marte, among others.
