BREAKING: Tinubu Postpones Kaduna Trip, Heads To Benue Over Escalating Crisis
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has rescheduled his official visit to Kaduna State in order to make an urgent trip to Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, amid escalating violence that has left hundreds dead and many more displaced.
The president’s visit to Benue is aimed at directly engaging stakeholders and communities affected by the persistent conflict in the state. It follows renewed attacks in Guma and Makurdi Local Government Areas that reportedly left over 200 people dead within days.
According to a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the president will meet with traditional rulers, political, religious, and community leaders, as well as youth representatives, to pursue lasting peace and reconciliation.
“President Tinubu’s visit is part of renewed efforts to foster peace and address the persistent conflict affecting communities in Benue State,” the statement read.
Ahead of the trip, the president has already dispatched a high-powered delegation to the state, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Inspector General of Police, heads of intelligence agencies, the National Security Adviser, and the chairmen of the Senate and House Defence Committees.
During his visit, President Tinubu is expected to hold a town hall meeting with stakeholders to chart a path toward sustainable peace in the region.
The president has repeatedly condemned the violence in Benue, describing it as “inhuman and anti-progress.” He has also urged leaders and residents to prioritize peace, mutual respect, and national unity.
Tinubu was originally scheduled to visit Kaduna State on June 18 to commission various state projects. That visit has now been moved to Thursday, June 19, 2025.
