Budget defense: National Assembly exonerates JAMB of financial misconduct

The National Assembly Joint Committee on Finance has cleared the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) of allegations of financial impropriety initially raised during the board’s 2025 budget defense session.

Earlier in the week, JAMB’s Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, was confronted by the committee over alleged expenditures, including N1.1 billion on meals and N850 million on fumigation.

These figures were labeled as excessive and prompted calls for further scrutiny of JAMB’s financial records.

Despite efforts by Oloyede to explain the expenses during the session, the committee directed him to provide detailed documentation of JAMB’s budgetary appropriations and expenditures for 2024 and 2025.

In a statement issued 48 hours later, the committee’s chairman, Senator Sani Musa clarified that the allegations were unfounded based on a review of the documents submitted by JAMB.

The statement, titled “Clarification on the JAMB Report on Revenue,” acknowledged the board’s prudent management of resources.

“For the purpose of clarity, the comprehensive report provided by JAMB indicates that the line items mentioned during Monday’s hearing on revenue do not suggest any mismanagement or misuse of the Board’s funds,” Musa said.

The chairman commended Oloyede for his exemplary leadership, saying “The Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, deserves commendation for demonstrating financial discipline and accountability in managing the Board’s resources effectively.

“This level of stewardship serves as a model for public institutions across the nation.”

The exoneration reinforces JAMB’s reputation for transparency and effective resource management under Professor Oloyede’s leadership. The development also highlights the importance of thorough budget reviews to ensure fairness and accountability in public institutions.

JAMB has been lauded for its financial reforms and efficient management, contributing significantly to the Federation Account.

The outcome of this review further solidified its standing as a benchmark for other government agencies.
