The minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said President Muhammadu Buhari will take a train ride on the new standard gauge railway line from Lagos to Ibadan by end of May.
Amaechi made the disclosure at the weekend during his routine inspection of ongoing construction of Lagos to Ibadan standard gauge railway project alongside Ghana’s minister of railway development, Joe Ghartey and members of Senate Committee on Land Transport.
The minister said assurance had been given by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the contractor handling the project, that by the end of this week 95 kilometres of tracks out of 156 kilometres of tracks required to reach Ibadan would have been laid.
According to Amaechi, CCECC has commenced laying of the second standard gauge railway tracks from Ijoko to Iju, Leadership reports.
Legit.ng gathers that the former governor of River state said civil work from Iju to Ebute-Metta has reached advanced stage preparatory to laying of tracks in that axis.
According to him, construction of railway stations has commenced at Ebute-Metta Junction in Lagos, Agbado and Papalanto in Ogun state.
Legit.ng previously reported that Ghana’s minister of railway development, Joe Ghartey, eulogised the Nigeria’s minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi, for his hard work after the duo went to inspect railway projects and facilities from Lagos to Ibadan.
Ghartey, who was in Nigeria alongside some parliament members from his home country, admitted that even though he works hard, Nigeria’s Amaechi works even harder, and this was evident with the level of work that has been completed within a short period of time.
Speaking with Legit.ng on a train ride from Lagos to project sites in the neighbouring states, the Ghanaian minister confirmed that the Chinese consultants described the former Rivers state governor as a workaholic.
He said: “The work that has been done here so far is very impressive. I am happy for Nigeria, at the same time, I’m also happy for Ghana. Nigerian and Ghana are intertwined and so far, what Nigeria has done is impressive.
“In Ghana, we have the old narrow gauge which we are trying to upgrade to a new standard gauge. Nigeria is a little ahead of us in terms of development but Ghana is also catching up.”
Asked what he has learnt from his visit to Nigeria, he said: “I’m really impressed with the minister’s hands on approach. I work hard, but he works very hard. The Chinese consultants and contractors have said to me that the minister pushed them.
“He pushed them to achieve what they didn’t think they could achieve. What they’ve done is what they themselves thought they couldn’t do.” (Legit.ng)
