Mohammed Kudus and Jarrod Bowen were on the scoresheet as West Ham United thrashed Arsenal 3-1 to dump the Gunners out of the Carabao Cup at London Stadium on Wednesday night.

Declan Rice endured a nightmare return to West Ham as Arsenal were dumped out of the Carabao Cup.

Rice, who signed for Arsenal in a £105 million deal from West Ham in the summer, came on as a second-half substitute, but could not stop the Hammers from reaching the quarter-finals.

West Ham took the lead from a corner in the 16th minute thanks to a Benjamin White own goal.

The Arsenal defender could not deal with a wonderful corner from Jarrod Bowen and nodded the ball past a helpless Ramsdale.

Mohammed Kudus doubled the Hammers’ lead in the 50th minute, hitting the ball past Ramsdale after a superb first touch to set up the chance for himself.

It was three for the hosts when Bowen collected White’s clearance to smash the ball into the back of the net.

Arteta turned to Rice, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, but none of the three could inspire an Arsenal comeback.

Substitute Martin Odegaard scored a consolation goal with the last kick but it was West Ham’s night as they marched into the quarter-finals.

Chelsea overcame Blackburn Rovers

Chelsea secured their passage into the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup after defeating Blackburn Rovers 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Goals from Benoit Badiashile and Raheem Sterling either side of half-time secured the last-16 win, keeping Mauricio Pochettino’s hopes of a first piece of silverware in England alive on Wednesday night.

Badiashile opened the scoring on the half-hour mark after Rovers keeper Leopold Wahlstedt palmed Conor Gallagher’s cross from a short corner straight to him inside the area.

Sterling doubled the lead with nearly an hour gone when he ran into Cole Palmer’s interception and curled the ball into the far corner.

Blackburn’s best chance came in the final moments, when substitute Arnor Sigurdsson was played through but denied by a fine Robert Sanchez save.

Chelsea have struggled in the Premier League this season, but their Carabao Cup performances have been positive.

Nunez stunner helps Liverpool defeat Bournemouth

Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez scored a stunner as Liverpool edged past Bournemouth 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium on Wednesday night to reach the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Nunez cut in from the left and picked his spot perfectly for the 70th-minute finish, curling the ball with plenty of pace into the top right corner beyond a despairing Ionut Radu.

Dutch striker Cody Gakpo put Liverpool in front in the first half when he pounced the ball from close range after Harvey Elliott’s volley was parried into his path.

But Bournemouth levelled through Justin Kluivert as he netted his first goal for the club since joining from Roma in the summer. He emerged unmarked at the far post to head home an Alex Scott corner in the 64th minute.

Newcastle outclass Manchester United

Dominant Newcastle sent defending champions Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup in a humiliating 3-0 win at Old Trafford to pile more pressure on Erik Ten Hag.

Miguel Almiron, Lewis Hall and Joe Willock scored the goals as the side dismissed the holders they beat in last season’s final – which seems a very long time ago now.

Newcastle had by far the better of the first half, better organised and more committed than a sorry United. They took the lead on 29 minutes through Miguel Almiron, then doubled the advantage on 36 thanks to Lewis Hall’s beautifully controlled volley.

It was another desperate day for Manchester United and Ten Hag, who have lost eight of their opening 15 games for the first time since the 1962/63 season.

Coming just three days after they suffered another three-goal home humiliation at the hands of Manchester City, the home side’s weaknesses were again exposed.
