Chelsea sign Garnacho from Man United for £40m

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Argentina winger, Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United in a deal worth £40 million.

The 21-year-old has signed a contract running until 2032, committing his long-term future to the London club.

The highly rated attacker arrives at Stamford Bridge after four successful seasons at Old Trafford, where he amassed over 90 Premier League appearances and firmly established himself as one of United’s brightest young stars.

Garnacho’s standout moment came in November 2023 when his acrobatic bicycle kick against Everton at Goodison Park earned him the 2024 FIFA Puskas Award, cementing his reputation as a player for the big stage.

Speaking after the move, Garnacho could not hide his excitement.

“It’s an incredible moment for my family and I to join this great club. I watched Chelsea win the Club World Cup, and to now be part of the world champions is special. We’re the best team in the world, and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.

Born in Madrid, Garnacho began his football journey with Getafe and Atletico Madrid before Manchester United secured his services in October 2020. He joined their academy at just 16 and quickly rose through the youth ranks.

The winger made his senior debut in April 2022 against Chelsea, coming off the bench in a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Just months later, he scored his first Premier League goal – a last-minute winner against Fulham – to underline his potential as a match-winner.

By the 2023/24 season, Garnacho had become a regular starter for United. He scored seven league goals, including a brace in a thrilling 4-3 clash against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, while also marking his Champions League debut campaign with a goal against Galatasaray.

Last season, he further enhanced his reputation, making 58 appearances in all competitions and contributing 11 goals and 10 assists. In total, Garnacho leaves Manchester United with 48 goal involvements in 144 senior games.

On the international stage, Garnacho made his Argentina debut in 2023 and was part of Lionel Scaloni’s squad that won the 2024 Copa America. He has earned eight senior caps so far and has often linked up with Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández for the Albiceleste.

Chelsea see Garnacho not only as a player for the present but also a cornerstone for the future as manager Enzo Maresca continues to build a youthful, dynamic squad at Stamford Bridge. His versatility across the front line and knack for producing decisive moments made him a prime target for the Blues.

The signing also highlights Chelsea’s determination to continue their aggressive squad rebuild, prising away one of United’s most valuable young talents. With his pace, flair and fearlessness, Garnacho will now look to win over the Stamford Bridge faithful.

“Welcome to Stamford Bridge, Alejandro,” read a club statement. “We are delighted to have you in blue.”
