Concerns over declaration of week-long Oro curfew in Ijebu-Ode

The declaration of a week-long Oro curfew by the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Council, Ogun State, Dare Alebiosu, has been visited by divergent views.

The council boss maintained that the declaration was in accordance with customs and traditions of the land.

He disclosed that the curfew, which takes effect from midnight to 4.00am, on Wednesday, July 30, was in observance of traditional rites during which movement is strictly prohibited and residents advised to remain indoors for their safety.

“The general public is hereby informed that there will be a daily Oro curfew across Ijebu-Ode Local Council for seven consecutive days, beginning from Wednesday, July 30 to Tuesday, August 5,” the council boss stated.

He urged residents, particularly non-indigenes, to cooperate fully with the directive, which is in line with customs, and to maintain public order.

A trader, Bisola Akinbola, described the declaration of a seven-day curfew as a good development, as that it does not affect their day-to-day business activities.

He commended the council boss for such a workable time for business to thrive during the Oro curfew.

But according to a resident, Mrs Modinat Adewale, the world is more civilised than the Oro curfew, urging the government not to allow the process to be hijacked by hoodlums to perpetuate evil on the residents.
