Court fines Anthony Joshua £1,167, penalty points for speeding
British boxing heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been ordered to pay £1,167 and received four penalty points on his licence in a speeding case heard by Hastings Magistrates’ Court.
On May 29, Joshua, 34, was caught driving his Range Rover Vogue at 44 mph in a 30 mph zone in Lewes, East Sussex.
Joshua has attributed his recent speeding offence to “fatigue” from intense training, according to court documents.
Joshua, who already had three points on his licence, sought to justify his actions by claiming a “lapse in concentration” due to his “very intense training camp,” which may have contributed to the offence.
He expressed his “sincerest apologies” for the incident, noting that “such circumstances do not justify speeding.”
Joshua wrote, “I am a professional athlete, currently in the middle of a very intense training camp.”
“My schedule has been extremely demanding, and I was travelling to or from a training session at the time and date of the offence.
“The physical and mental fatigue from my training may have clouded my judgement, leading to this lapse in concentration.
“I recognise that such circumstances do not justify speeding, and I deeply regret allowing myself to make this error.”
Joshua, however, asked the court to consider the potential impact of a driving ban on his career, as he relies heavily on his ability to drive to and from training sessions.
“As an athlete, I rely heavily on my ability to drive to and from training sessions, which are often at locations that are difficult to reach.”
Despite his plea, the court ordered him to pay £1,167 in the case dealt with by Hastings Magistrates’ Court.
According to the Evening Standard, this included a £769 fine, £90 in costs, and a £308 victim surcharge, as well as four penalty points on his licence but no driving ban.
