Akin Abayomi, Lagos commissioner for health, says there has been a decrease in the number of positive cases in the state.

The commissioner shared the state’s COVID-19 update on Wednesday.

He said the average case positivity now stands at 9.0 percent and the fatality rate is pegged at 0.71 percent. 

According to the update, there has been a consistent decrease in case positivity from the peak of the fourth wave to date, which signifies “the end of the fourth wave”.

“Case positivity dropped from 29.3 percent on December 21, 2021 to 0.5 percent on January 21, 2022. The total number of confirmed cases is now 98,977,” the update reads.

The data stated that 1,087,835 COVID-19 sample tests had been conducted in the state, with 80 percent done by private laboratories, while 20 percent was conducted by public laboratories. 

It also showed that bed occupancy in private and public hospitals in the state had dropped significantly.

As of February 22, Nigeria had a total of 254,352 cases, 230,846 recoveries and 3,142 fatalities, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), over 11.1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases had been reported in Africa, with more than 10.4 million recoveries and 247,000 deaths cumulatively.
