The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone C, Owerri, Imo State, has confiscated five exotic armoured vehicles with Duty Paid Value of N324,535,863.
Providing the details of the seized vehicles at the Customs Warehouse, Aduwawa, Benin City on Tuesday, the Customs Area Controller, Kayode Olusemire, explained that the duty paid value for the 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser was N81.7m, while that of the 2018 model Toyota Hilux was N95.65m.
“The DPVs for the 2016 model of the armoured Toyota Land Cruiser, 2017 model Range Rover and 2014 model of Toyota Land Cruiser are N76,167,850; N10,268,013 and N60,750,000, respectively. When put together, the sum is N324,535,863,” Olusemire added.
He regretted that some Nigerians were buying luxury vehicles without paying the duty on them.
Olusemire said, “Not paying the Duty Paid Value on such vehicles is sabotaging the nation’s economy. It is pertinent to state at this point that what Nigerians should be more interested in is to help in revamping the nation’s dwindling economy by paying the necessary duties on such vehicles and other goods brought into the country.
“I, therefore, appeal to Nigerians to desist from buying such exotic cars that run into millions of naira without paying the commensurate duties on them.”
He further advised Nigerians, especially those involved in international business, to always visit the Customs website to be fully acquainted with the legitimate way of handling the business, instead of doing it their own way.
Olusemire also advised Nigerians to always ask for the ‘C’ number of the vehicles they want before buying them and contact any Customs ‘F’ Desk for confirmation.
“They are equally to confirm the End User Certificate. This is to control the smuggling activities in the country,” he added.
The comptroller, who said the NCS was running both television and radio campaigns on the Customs activities, stating that it would leave no stone unturned to ensure that smuggling and other obnoxious activities in the country were reduced to the barest minimum.
Olusemire added, “Some indecent Nigerians should stop the act of smuggling. This is because we will not rest on our laurels to ensure that any smuggled vehicle is intercepted and seized, and only to be released if the duty on it is paid to the last kobo.
“Seizing the cars and paying the duties to the last kobo will serve as a deterrent to both smugglers and buyers.” (Punch)
