The Lagos State House of Assembly, operatives of the Department of State Security, DSS, have uncovered a significant cache of arms in the office of the ousted Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa.

This shocking revelation comes just one day after tensions escalated at the Assembly complex, heightened by the presence of DSS operatives.

Sources within the Assembly revealed that during routine security checks, personnel discovered a cache of firearms, including 47 pump-action rifles and live cartridges, carefully stored in the former Speaker’s office.

The security team promptly notified the DSS, who swiftly intervened, conducted an inventory of the weapons, and secured them for further analysis.

Photos of the seized arms and DSS operatives cataloging them have since emerged, sparking speculation about the purpose of the weapons cache.

Assembly insiders suggest that this discovery may shed light on Obasa’s determination to cling to power, implying possible involvement in illegal activities.

A senior source within the Assembly disclosed that Obasa’s Chief Security Officer, Baruwa Idris Okeowo, a retired service officer, was in charge of overseeing security at the Speaker’s office.

The find has led to speculation that the former Speaker might have been engaged in arms trafficking, as there seems to be no other reasonable explanation for the presence of such a large weapons stockpile in a political office.

“We now understand why he was so desperate to return to office. It appears there was unfinished business he needed to attend to, and the inability to regain his position has disrupted his plans,” a source at the Assembly stated.

Another insider added, “This also raises concerns about his intentions. Could he have been preparing to resort to violence to forcefully return as Speaker? And if he has such a cache in his office, what about his private residence?”

Additional speculation suggests that Obasa may not have acted alone, as security operatives are now investigating potential accomplices.

“The DSS must not only focus on the discovery of these arms but also conduct a thorough investigation to determine who else is involved. This could be part of a larger network,” the source emphasized.

A lawmaker from the Assembly, who requested to remain anonymous due to the ongoing investigation, voiced concerns about the potential consequences of the discovery.

“This is just one of the many unimaginable things linked to the former Speaker. It is a huge embarrassment to the Lagos State House of Assembly, and we hope that this matter will not be swept under the carpet.”

He further implied that the presidency may not be supporting Obasa’s actions, stating, “We are even more convinced that our leader, President Bola Tinubu, is not in support of his excesses and his attempts to undermine democracy in Lagos State. The public needs to understand the gravity of what we are dealing with here.”

Although the DSS has not yet issued an official statement on the matter, it was gathered that the seized weapons are in custody and an official report has been filed.

However, there are ongoing concerns about possible interference from influential individuals who may try to hinder the investigation.

“This concern is valid,” a source close to the investigation admitted.

“But we must also credit some within the security apparatus for maintaining professional integrity. Not everyone is willing to compromise their credibility for an individual.”
