DSS preventing us from visiting Nnamdi Kanu – Lawyer cries out
Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has said the Department of State Services (DSS) is preventing them from visiting Kanu in detention.
Kanu is in DSS detention from where he is being brought to court in his ongoing trial for treason and others.
Ejimafor, in a tweet on Monday expressed frustration as DSS officials employed several tactics to stop him and others from seeing Kanu.
He said last Thursday, they were not allowed visitation with Onyendu to Kanu because the DSS said special squad in charge of visitation went on outside assignment.
Ejmafor added that they came again on Monday as they were asked to do, but that the DSS was still telling them the same thing.
He wrote: “ALERT: Last Thursday, we were not allowed visitation with Onyendu because, according to DSS, the “special squad” in charge of visitations went on “outside assignment”.
“They asked us to come on Monday (today). Today, we‘re at DSS. They’re telling us the same thing. We DISAGREE.”
Kanu was re-arrested on June 27, 2021, in Kenya by Interpol and extradited to Nigeria where he is now facing trial. Kanu’s brother claimed that he had been arrested by the Kenyan police.
Kenyan High Commissioner Wilfred Machage refuted this claim, stating that Kenyan authorities had not been involved in the arrest and challenged anyone to present evidence proving otherwise.
The trial began in October 2021, with Kanu being accused of “terrorism, treason, involvement with a banned separatist movement, inciting public violence through radio broadcasts, and defamation of Nigerian authorities through broadcasts”.
He pleaded non-guilty in all cases. The proceedings were accompanied by protests and general strikes organized by his supporters.
