Elon Musk-led DOGE developing AI chatbot for US government – Report
The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is reportedly developing a generative AI chatbot for the country’s general services administration (GSA).
The department is under the leadership of Elon Musk, the American billionaire and founder of Tesla Inc.
According to Wired, the chatbot, called GSAi, is part of Musk and President Donald Trump’s broader plans to modernise government operations using artificial intelligence.
Musk was appointed to lead DOGE in November 2024 alongside Vivek Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate.
The department was created by Trump to improve efficiency and cut costs within the US government.
Sources familiar with the matter told Wired that GSAi aims to enhance the productivity of the agency’s 12,000 employees, who manage federal office buildings, contracts, and IT infrastructure.
The chatbot is also expected to help analyse large volumes of procurement and contract data.
Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla employee who now oversees the technology transformation services at GSA, reportedly hinted at the project in a meeting on Wednesday.
“Another [project] I’m trying to work on is a centralized place for contracts so we can run analysis on them,” Shedd said in an audio recording.
“This is not new at all—this is something that’s been in motion before we started. The thing that’s different is potentially building that whole system in-house and building it very quickly. This goes back to this, ‘How do we understand how the government is spending money?”
Sources added that the decision to develop GSAi follows previous discussions between the GSA and Google regarding its Gemini AI system.
The White House has not commented on the report, according to Wired.
In January, Trump unveiled a $500 billion initiative called the Stargate Project, aimed at solidifying the US’ dominance in AI.
