EPL: Asensio double sinks Chelsea as Arsenal suffers home defeat
Marco Asensio scored a 90th-minute winner in Aston Villa’s comeback 2-1 win over Chelsea in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Villa Park on Saturday.
The former Real Madrid star, signed on loan from Paris Saint-Germain in January, scored both goals for the home side who worked their way back to all three points after conceding an early goal to the Blues.
Chelsea have been out-of-sorts in recent matches but they put their noses in the lead on nine minutes through Enzo Fernandez. The midfielder slotted home a low cross from Pedro Neto to put Enzo Maresca’s side 1-0 up.
The home side improved as both teams went toe-to-toe, but the game waited until the second half for the next goal scored by Villa when two of their new recruits teamed up.
Marcus Rashford, on loan from Manchester United, crossed for Asensio to finish with aplomb in the six-yard box for 1-1. The former Real Madrid star then completed the turnaround with a first-time strike that crept underneath Filip Jorgensen, Chelsea goalkeeper, and into the net.
Victory lifts Aston Villa up to seventh position with 42 points from 27 matches, one point behind sixth-placed Chelsea who have also played a match less.
Defeat is Chelsea’s third in five matches. The Blues have won only twice in ten EPL matches.
In earlier matches, ten-man Arsenal suffered a shock 1-0 loss at home to West Ham United and missed the chance to close the gap on leaders Liverpool.
Manchester United played poorly but were able to score two late goals to draw 2-2 at Everton for a point.
Elsewhere, relegation-threatened duo of Southampton and Ipswich both concede four goals each as they suffered heavy defeats at home.
