EPL: Liverpool extend lead to 16 points as Forest defeat Man City

Liverpool put on an excellent second-half performance to claw back from a goal down and claim a 3-1 victory over Southampton in their English Premier League (EPL) encounter at Anfield on Saturday.

Southampton, bottom of the EPL, put the Reds under pressure with their first-half goal but Arne Slot’s side responded with goals from Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah (brace).

Southampton took the lead on 45 minutes through Will Smallbone who capitalized on a defensive mix-up between the Liverpool duo of Alisson Becker and Virgil van Dijk to slot into the net from a tight angle for a 1-0 lead to the visitors at the half-time break.

Liverpool turned the game around with two goals in two minutes, first Nunez converted from close range on 52 minutes after latching on to Luiz Diaz’s pass, before the Uruguayan was brought down for a penalty expertly dispatched by Salah a minute later.

Salah then converted another penalty late in the game to add more gloss to the scoreline at full-time.

Victory continues Liverpool’s unbeaten run now on 25 matches. The Reds have 70 points from 29 matches, 16 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal who have played two matches less.

In other encounters, Nottingham Forest battled to a shock 1-0 win over Manchester City at the City Ground.

Calvin Bassey, the Nigerian international, put in a battling display but could not stop Fulham from succumbing to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Brighton.
