Ex-Deputy Gov Demands Cancellation Of Lagos LG Poll
Former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele, has called for cancellation of the Saturday council election in the state over alleged irregularities and disenfranchisement of voters.
Bucknor-Akerele was the deputy to former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu from 1999 to 2002.
The election was held in the 20 LGAs and 37 local council development areas of the state.
However, the exercise was marred by late arrival of electoral officials, discrepancies and low turnout of voters.
Bucknor-Akerele, who spoke to Nigeria Info, expressed frustration over her inability to vote at her polling unit.
She said, “I have been to my own unit, my name is not there. I am calling for the cancellation of this election because there’s a clear effort to rig the election in favour of one party, because otherwise, why is it that people are not able to vote in their units?”
She added that several units had been moved without prior notice.
Bucknor-Akerele asked the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to cancel the election, citing disenfranchisement and widespread logistical failures.
“There is a clear effort to rig the election in favour of one party. Many people are not able to vote because they have completely disrupted all the polling units,” she said.
