Amid concerns of a second wave of coronavirus infections, Nigeria’s daily count of positive cases has increased again — the highest in the past 15 weeks.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) confirmed 390 new cases in 19 states and the federal capital territory (FCT) in its update for December 7, 2020.
According to the figures released by the NCDC so far, this is the country’s highest daily count since August 22 when 601 new infections were recorded — at the time, Nigeria had confirmed 51,905 cases but 38,767 people had recovered.
FCT and Gombe were top of the list on Monday, with 89 new infections each, followed by Kaduna with 62 cases.
However, despite confirming the most new cases on Monday, Gombe also recorded over 70 new recoveries.
Out of 173 patients confirmed to have recovered from the virus, NCDC noted that “our discharges today include 74 community recoveries in Gombe State and 6 community recoveries in Lagos State managed in line with guidelines.”
Meanwhile, one person died of COVID-19 complications — the Kano ministry of health confirmed one death in the state — increasing the current fatality toll to 1,181.
A total of 69,645 cases have now been confirmed since February 27, out of which 64,947 patients have recovered, while 3,517 are still active infections.
