The Federal Government yesterday resumed the trial of suspected Boko Haram insurgents at the Kainji Prosecution Project Phase IV.

The proceedings were opened by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN.

The first phase of the Kainji trials, launched in October 2017, yielded notable results. The government secured a total of 366 convictions, demonstrating the strength of the legal process. However, 896 suspects were discharged due to insufficient evidence. Additionally, 61 cases remain pending further hearings.

The Attorney-General acknowledged the dedication of all stakeholders involved in the first three phases, which spanned from October 2017 to July 2018.

“I must, at this point, challenge all stakeholders to ensure that the momentum is sustained, seeing how important this assignment is to the wellbeing of our beloved country and her people,” Fagbemi said.

This resumption of trials comes after the January announcement by the Federal Government of its plans to proceed with the second phase, initially scheduled for March.
