FG To Launch Major Crackdown On Irregular Migrants From Aug. 1
The Federal Government has announced a major initiative to address irregular migration in the country, with enforcement of stricter regulations beginning on August 1, 2025.
To ensure compliance, a grace period will be implemented from May 1 to August 1, 2025, during which the new Expatriate Administration System will be rolled out, the government announced on Tuesday.
Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, revealed these plans during a meeting with the Nigerian Employers’ Consultative Association (NECA) in Abuja, emphasizing that a three-month immigration amnesty program would be available to assist migrants in regularizing their status.
Tunji-Ojo also issued a stern warning to companies obstructing the Nigeria Immigration Service’s work, making it clear that the government will no longer tolerate such actions. “The days when companies block or avoid immigration laws are over,” he stated.
“Private sector businesses must allow the Immigration Service to carry out its duties,” he added, stating that any company that interferes will face strict consequences.
Additionally, the minister addressed concerns about the current immigration service fees, acknowledging the need for adjustments.
A revised fee structure has been negotiated and will be officially released by the Ministry and NECA. These new fees and the immigration system will take effect on May 1, 2025, with the three-month amnesty running until July 31, 2025. After that, strict enforcement of immigration laws will begin on August 1.
The government urged all irregular migrants to use the period to regularize their status and comply with immigration protocols.
In 2024 alone, the federal government deported 828 illegal immigrants as part of efforts to combat irregular migration and enhance national security.
