Flight attendant sacked after accepting boyfriend’s proposal during flight
A flight attendant who accepted her boyfriend’s proposal mid-flight, has been sacked by the management of China Eastern Airlines.
The flight attendant became an internet sensation in May, after she accepted her boyfriend’s proposal in clip filmed about half an hour after take-off. In the video, her boyfriend of four years was spotted kneeling on the floor in front of her and holding up a ring.
After they embraced as she accepted the proposal, the flight attendant made an announcement over the tannoy, telling her passengers that she didn’t know her boyfriend was going to do it and also thanked them for being witnesses of the happy occasion.
However on September 10, a Chinese television station reported that the flight attendant has since been sacked from the company. In the letter, she was accused of letter “ignoring the safety of passengers” following her boyfriend’s marriage proposal.
The airline also allegedly said her “private romantic behaviour caused turmoil among passengers”. The sack has however generated controversy, as some argued that firing her for her boyfriend’s actions is “inhuman”, while others maintained that handling “private affairs” during working hours is inappropriate.
“Before the plane takes off, it is important to evenly distribute the weight of the baggage and passengers in the plane,” one netizen said, providing an explanation for the airlines’ decision.
“A disturbance like that of a marriage proposal may cause passengers to unfasten seat belts and move to different places in the plane. This, in turn, may affect the plane’s balance and air flow.”
China Eastern Airlines is however yet to comment or issue an official statement on the matter, as of the time of this report.
