Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Yushau Ahmed, has disclosed that the delay in paying corps members their newly approved allowance of N77,000 is due to the non-release of funds by the Federal Government.
The Guardian reports that the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) had in a statement made available to the press last week and signed by the NYSC”s acting Director, Information and Public Relations, (ADIPR), Caroline Embu, announced that the Federal Government had approved the increase in the monthly allowance effective from July 2024.
Embu’s announcement was confirmed by the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission in a letter on September 25, 2024, signed by its Chairman, Ekpo Nta.
Despite the approval, corps members were not paid the new allowance in September.
In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Ahmed revealed that while the salaries of NYSC staff were increased about four to five months ago, the increment has yet to be implemented.
“The funds required for implementing the new allowance have not been released yet. This has affected not just corps members but also our staff, whose salary increase, approved four to five months ago, has also not been implemented,” he said.
He added, “While there is no confirmed date for the payment of the new allowance, we have been assured that corps members’ monthly stipends have been increased since 29 July 2024.”
