It’s been far over a year since we’ve seen a new episode of Game of Thrones, as the Season 7 finale premiered on Aug. 27, 2017. In the months following, all we’ve been doing is re-watching the seasons on repeat, listening for any accidental spoilers from the series’ cast, and above all, coming up with theories about the show and the books to discuss with our friends and fellow fans online. While there are tons and tons of fan theories out there, there can only be one correct guess as to how the beloved series ends. And apparently, fans have correctly guessed it already, according to George RR Martin himself.

At the Edinburgh International Book Festival back in 2014, Martin admitted he’s heard his planned ending of Game of Thrones from fans theorizing before.

“So many readers were reading the books with so much attention that they were throwing up some theories, and while some of those theories were amusing bulls**t and creative, some of the theories are right,” Martin said. “At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I’d planted in the books and came to the right solution.”

You see? Re-watching and re-reading to come up with the perfect theory isn’t a complete waste of time. We could be onto something!

While Martin knows the ending of his A Song of Ice and Fire book series has been guessed by viewers, that isn’t to say it’ll necessarily be the same ending to HBO’s Game of Thrones TV series. Despite speculation both will have the same ending, there hasn’t been confirmation or denial of that from Martin or showrunnners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Per usual with GoT, we’re all just theorizing here.

We’ll know for sure how Game of Thrones ends when it returns for the final time in 2019. As far as Martin’s books, we’ll be waiting on that ending for a long while to come, so keep the fan theories coming.
