Ghana: About 50 Nigerians arrested for cyber fraud, human trafficking
About 50 Nigerian nationals, including a landlord, have been arrested by the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) in a dawn operation at McCarthy Hills, Ga South Municipality of Accra, over alleged involvement in cybercrime and human trafficking.
The raid, conducted on Thursday, July 24, 2025, followed intelligence reports suggesting that some foreign nationals were unlawfully residing in the area and may have been trafficked into the country and coerced into online fraudulent activities.
“This operation follows intelligence gathered on the illegal stay of some foreign nationals in the area, some of whom were trafficked into the country and forced into cyber fraud by their facilitators,” said Assistant Commissioner of Immigration M. Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs of the GIS, in a statement.
According to Graphic.com.gh, the operation, carried out in collaboration with other national security agencies, led to the arrest of several individuals and the landlord of the premises allegedly used for the illegal activities.
Mr Amoako-Atta said investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are being screened, adding that updates would be provided as developments unfold.
The McCarthy Hills raid is the latest in a series of operations targeting cybercrime and trafficking rings in residential communities across Accra.
In April 2025, a similar operation by a joint task force comprising the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), the Ghana Police Service, and other security agencies resulted in the arrest of 219 foreign nationals, including minors, at Oyarifa in the Ga East Municipality, where authorities uncovered a large-scale cyber fraud and trafficking syndicate.
