Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has approved the formation of seven-man committee o spearhead the immediate implementation of local government autonomy.

In a release issued to media practitioners in Jalingo on Sunday by the Chief Press Secretary, Yusuf Sanda, the committee is tasked with the sole responsibility of advising the state government on the full implementation of the council’s autonomy.

The statement revealed that the committee will as well guide Taraba government in ensuring the successful implementation of the new development.

It would be recalled that the Supreme Court recently granted full autonomy to the entire 774 local government councils across Nigeria.

Expressing his commitment towards actualising local government autonomy in Taraba, the governor appointed the former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Abel Peter Diah, as the committee chairman.

Other members of the committee are, the Secretary to the Government of State,(SGS), the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Yakubu Maikasuwa (SAN).

Other members include state chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Alhaji Hassan Aminu, Director of Inspectorate BLGT & CA Lilian Jonathan, Mr. Bala Hussein, and Mr. Ezekiel Polycarp, who will serve as Member and Secretary respectively.

The governor who urged urged the committee to prepare for their assignment, announced tomorrow, July 15, 2024, as the inauguration date for the committee.

He promised to take all necessary and legitimate steps to ensure the effective functioning of local government autonomy in the sixteen local government councils of the state.

Kefas, as revealed by The Guardian findings, is the first governor in the country to have taken steps to ensure that the new development sees the light of the day since the Supreme Court judgement.
