Greg Abel, Vice Chairman of Berkshire Hathaway’s Non-Insurance Operations, has been confirmed as Warren Buffett’s successor. Abel, a Canadian born in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1962, has been with Berkshire since 2000, joining when the company acquired MidAmerican Energy. Under his leadership, MidAmerican evolved into Berkshire Hathaway Energy, the largest producer of wind energy in the United States.
Buffett announced Abel’s succession plan during a 2021 shareholder meeting, affirming his capabilities to lead the company. Abel will oversee Berkshire’s extensive portfolio, which includes businesses like Geico, Dairy Queen, and BNSF Railway. He will also collaborate with investment managers Todd Combs and Ted Weschler to manage the company’s stock portfolio, ensuring operational continuity.
