Group seeks govs’ support for Ekweremadu

Enugu State citizens, under the platform of ‘Ndi Oganiru Enugu State,’ have called on Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to mobilise other South East governors and leaders to find a way of getting Senator Ike Ekweremadu released from detention in the United Kingdom.

The former Deputy Senate President is currently facing organ trafficking charges in the UK.

The group’s President, Jude Asogwa, made the call during a press conference in Enugu on Thursday.

Asogwa said, “We use this medium to call on the governor of our state, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, to act fast and call on all the South East governors to find a way of getting our patron, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, out of detention in UK.

“It baffles us that till now, Enugu State has not called an emergency meeting of South East Governors Forum and South East stakeholders meeting to find a way of approaching the Federal Government to bail an illustrious son out.”

He added, “We also call on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice to use the same process used in getting a Nigerian lady arrested for drug-related offence out to free Ekweremadu, or are we not all Nigerians or does it mean that some are more Nigerian than others?”

The group also called on the Economic Community of West African States to urge the UK authorities to release its former Speaker “because it’s becoming clearer that he is being held in the UK for nothing.

“To the UK government, it surprises us that you had a new law on organ donation and Sen Ike Ekweremadu wrote to your country through your embassy. It is expected that you guide him by either rejecting the visa or guide him on steps to get it right as your new law states.”

“One gets more confused that you offered David the visa and when he got to the UK you now arrested Prof. Ekweremadu. Were you not meant to guide or deny him visa? Now, David said he is a minor, you have confirmed that he’s an adult who can make his own decisions.”

While urging UK authorities to release Ekweremadu, Asogwa added, “South East governors, South East stakeholders, Nigerian government and Africa in general need to wake up and rescue Africa.

“Ndi Oganiru Enugu State appeals to President Muhammadu Buhari to assist us and get one of his best senators out.”
