Although the cast members of Game of Thrones have all spoken on how heartbreaking it was to say goodbye to the acclaimed series, fans still have to wait months to know what goes down in Westeros for the final time. We’re not ready to finish the series either, but we at least want to know what will happen in the finale, namely, who will be the one to sit at the Iron Throne.
There are plenty and plenty of theories as to who will be the one, and a recent discussion on Reddit claims Jon Snow will be victorious—if only with the Iron Throne.
Redditor irishpisano recently brought up Melisandre’s prophecy from all the way back to Season 2. Remember it? The one we all were supposed to believe was about Stannis? If you need a refresher, the Red Woman tells the former Lord of Dragonstone:
“This war has just begun. It will last for years. Thousands will die at your command. You will betray the men serving you. You will betray your family, and you will betray everything you once held dear, and it will all be worth it because you are the son of fire. You are the warrior of blood. You will sweep aside this pretender and that one. You will be king.”
We all were under the impression that Melisandre was referring to the war for the Iron Throne (what else would it be concerning Stannis?), but who’s to say the prophecy wasn’t actually about Jon, with the war actually being against the Night King? Given the events that have happened since Season 2, it’s not much of a stretch. Although some of the things Melisandre tells Stannis do come true for him, he ends up dead. The prophecy is for the “son of fire…warrior of blood.” This part alone seems blatantly about Jon.
“Thousands have died at Jon’s command: The Wildlings during the Battle at the Wall, the people that died at Hardhome, and the casualties of the Battle of the Bastards, not to mention the forthcoming deaths,” the theorist points out. “Jon betrayed the men who appointed him king, and betrayed his family, and the Night’s Watch, and the North by swearing allegiance to Dany.”
Everything so far checks out, but the part about sweeping people aside is a bit more difficult to figure out. The Redditor posits that maybe this bit could be referring to Sansa Stark and Daenerys Targaryen, two of the people Jon cares the most about. “Perhaps Dany will fall under this category (as Jon is the true heir to the Iron Throne, not Dany, and not Gendry, and not Cersei). Perhaps Sansa (“Winterfell is yours, your Grace.” (Jon was back in WF, thus WF was not Sansa’s to give at that point, but Jon’s,” they write.
If this theory proves true, besides fans being mind blown, Jon wouldn’t end up exactly happy, we don’t think. Even sitting on the Iron Throne, he would’ve had to abandon his sister and lover to get there. However, given that he will most likely find out his true relation to Daenerys in the upcoming season, maybe it’s for the best.
