The re-election of Donald Trump as president in 2024 has led many Americans to consider moving abroad, with Canada as a popular destination.

Minnesota resident Krystal Majerus Enquist described her reaction to Trump’s win as “nauseating,” expressing disappointment at living in a country that, in her view, has chosen a leader who is “hateful, spreading fear … It feels like we just keep going backwards.”

Following the election, Google searches for “How to move to Canada” surged by over 5,000 per cent, particularly in border states like Vermont, Maine, and New Hampshire.

While Majerus Enquist finds the prospect of moving enticing, she acknowledges the practical difficulties, saying, “When you start thinking about what that means for my job, my house, all these commitments, that’s when it gets harder.”

Despite the challenges, she is considering relocating due to Trump’s presidency, gun violence, and a perceived culture of intolerance in the U.S.

Americans already have a relative advantage over citizens of other countries simply by virtue of their language proficiency and the fact that the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement makes it easy to travel between the two countries.
