Football legend, Diego Maradona died on Wednesday at the age of 60 and threw a shockwave across the football family including one of Nigeria’s greatest ever goalkeeper, Peter Rufai.

The Argentine inspired victory over the Super Eagles at the USA 94’ FIFA World Cup when his quick thinking created space for Claudio Caniggia to score a brace past Rufai after Samson Siasia had given the Super Eagles an early lead.

‘Truly, I played against Diego. I was short of words when I heard the news. In fact, I was about rounding up plans with a friend in Argentina to give him a surprise visit,’ a shocked Peter Rufai told newsmen.

Maradona won the FIFA World Cup in 1986 with Argentina and shared his genius with clubs like Barcelona, Napoli and Boca Juniors.

The great Argentine played his final international match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
