Governor Emeka Ihedioha of Imo State has upgraded Imo State Zoological Garden to Wildlife Park and Nature Reserve, just as he had banned all illegal dredging activities in Nworie Confluence Area.

The governor has also remerged the botanical and zoological gardens of the state to become Department of Wildlife and Nature Reserve; he said that the new department would be headed by the most senior wildlife specialist in the state, Francis Abioye.

The governor made the declaration in Owerri at the flag-off of World Environmental Day organised by Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.

Speaking on the theme ‘Air Pollution’, Ihedioha said Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) as required by law shall become imperative for developmental projects in Imo.

He said mining activities must be regulated in the state by the Ministry of Environment to ensure that the system was safe for all.

“Our government shall take steps to preserve all state forest reserves that have been devastated by past political leaders.
