The residents of Ikoyi-Obalende have expressed their gratitude for the return of the Ounjè Eko Sunday market, which was reopened today, Sunday, September 1, 2024, by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. The market, which offers a 25% discount on essential food items, was met with enthusiasm by the local community.

At the Former Nursing School Ground, 1-9 Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, one of the market’s locations, our correspondent observed residents queuing to purchase discounted foodstuffs. The atmosphere was orderly as people took advantage of the reduced prices.

Mrs. Janet Obi, a local resident, praised the initiative, highlighting the significant savings compared to regular market prices. “For instance, a crate of eggs that costs N5,000 outside is sold for N3,600 here. Even the garri, 4kg, is offered at a lower price,” she said. Mrs. Obi expressed her appreciation to Governor Sanwo-Olu and their representative in the Lagos Assembly, Engr. Gbolahan Yishawu, for bringing back the discount market.

Another buyer, Mrs. Tunrayo Oredola, lauded the return of the market, noting its importance in addressing food insecurity. “This initiative is highly appreciated because there is real hunger in the land,” she stated.

Mr. Isaac Jared echoed these sentiments, thanking God for the market’s return as it helps alleviate the high cost of living. He urged the government to maintain and expand the initiative across Lagos State. “People are suffering, and this market brings relief. It’s orderly, and there’s no need for connections to access the foodstuffs. We also appreciate the one-thousand-naira voucher provided to our constituency,” he added.

Engr. Olabisi Rita Lois, a staff member of the Ministry of Agriculture and the market leader for Ikoyi-Obalende, noted the difference in prices compared to the first phase of the market. “There is a general 20% increase in product prices, but the discount still makes a significant difference given the current economic situation,” she explained.

Lois emphasized that the market aims to provide families with affordable, balanced diets and assured residents that there is enough food for everyone without the need for disputes.

The Ounjè Eko Sunday market features a variety of foodstuffs, including garri, rice, beans, eggs, bread, peppers, and onions. While initial attendance may not be as high as the first phase, Lois remains optimistic that the market will continue to grow in popularity as it provides much-needed support to families in the community.
