Desmond Elliot, the actor-turned-politician, has categorically denied allegations of being gay.

The controversy stemmed from a blog post alleging several Nigerian celebrities, including actors and reality stars, identify as gay.

The post sparked heated debates on social media, with most named individuals remaining silent.

But in an interview with TVC, the politician dismissed the claims, labeling them “irrelevant” and “baseless opinions”.

Elliot reaffirmed his heterosexuality while emphasising individual freedom to “identify as they choose, as long as it’s within the law”.

“Why would I respond to allegations made against me when it did not reduce or increase my life?” he said.

“Secondly, it is an opinion that is being conceived. And I do not think it is necessary for me to come out and say it’s true or not true; as long as I’m affecting people positively, I’m good.

“If you feel you identify as something as long as it is within the law. People do not have to accept it, do you.

“So let me say right here, I am straight. You can never have anyone straighter than me.

“If some people want to enjoy themselves through publicity, that is left to them but I do not care really. Do you and enjoy yourself but do it within the law and with respect to your neighbours.”

Maureen Esisi, the Nigerian fashion designer, also recently denied claims of being lesbian or bisexual.
